'88 exhaust versus '82 200

I need to replace the rear and front mufflers on my '82. I have an '88 parts car with a good exhaust. The exhaust systems on the two cars look nearly identical, but FCP Groton shows mufflers for the years 1976 - 1982; 1983 - 1984 and finally 1985 - 1993, so they must not be interchangeable. My question is why aren't they interchangeable? The mounting hardware looks identical (although I'm not looking with the benefit of a lift) so I'm guessing the difference is inside the mufflers themselves. Is that correct?
