PS noise? What does it mean? 700 1987

Hi folks,

I have noticed that my PS makes a bit of noise. On RWD cars, it seems to me that a little growl is normal (at idle, when turning on the spot or going slow), but I have also observed a different noise in mine.

When I get to full left or right extension of the rack, and hit the 'stop' I hear a scary GRRRKK noise. I always back off the steering a little bit, so I don't push it to the stop again. This, I also consider normal.

When I took a curve, at speed, and a considerable amount of assist was needed, I heard this scary GRKKK noise (window open) again. It seems that the PS pump was struggling to assist the steering as it met its stress in the turn. I had the wheel nowhere near full extension to the right or left.

Does this indicate 1) a slipping belt, 2) a faulty pump, 3) a out-of-line belt?

Thanks!

Ari
