Silencing hood hinge springs 200

The other day, I happened to notice that the hood hinge springs on my 89 240 make a lot of noise, if for example, the car hits a bump, the hood is shut vigorously, or if you slap either back corner of the hood. I suspect they also drone and resonate with the various vibrations that come and go at different speeds, and add to the general noise level in the car.

The best thing I can think of is to remove the inner of the two springs, stretch a section of bicycle inner tube over it, and reinstall it. The only problem is, how do I get the spring off? I tried grabbing it with Vise Grips, but all that accomplished was chipping and scratching up the (otherwise perfect) original paint on the spring. (and a near miss on a big scratch on the top of the fender when the Vise Grips slipped)
