1986 Volvo 840 1986

As far as I know, there was never such a thing as an 840, anywhere in the world. All 8 series cars had a 5 cylinder engine. There were alternate versions in other markets (than the US) though, with displacements as small as 2.0 litres, and, in some cases, a different head with two valves per cylinder.

I believe the 850 was introduced in Europe in 1991, and it took a couple of years to make it to the USA. The folowing year the car underwent its first major revision. Eventually it was renamed S70/V70.

What there was, and what you may be thinking of, is a 480ES, which is a sporty front wheel drive hatchback, with, I believe, a 4 cylinder Renault engine. These were available in the mid-80s, in England and Europe, but never in the US.
