960 AC clutch blows fuse. 900 1997

Just got a '97 960 in good shape but the AC keeps blowing the clutch fuse.
The system blows cold air long enough for the shop to clear it as "fixed" then the fuse goes on the way home.

The non-Volvo specialist that worked on it says it needs a new compressor and dryer. The dryer is a given any time the system is opened up but how could a bad compressor cause the clutch fuse to blow?
Also, does anyone have a good supplier for a compressor? I'm finding them for around $350 new and another $50 or so for the dryer.

I bought this car for the wife and so far she hasn't even had a chance to drive it. Very frustrating.

Thanks for any advice.
