1988 740 turbo wagon was dying, now will not start, or run 700

tearing my hair out here. my 88 740 turbo wagon was first dying on the road, then restarting after a few tries. this has been going on for a while. Then it wouldn't run in the driveway. it would fire, like it wanted to run, but wouldn't stay running. I've been messing with it. new cap and rotor, new wires, new plugs; timing belt isn't broken though it's due to be replaced ( think I will check the timing in case it lost a tooth/ skipped a tooth) I do periodically loosen/ tighten the tensioner belt. - it has wet plugs, so it's getting fuel- I replaced the fuel filter- the fuel seems rusty at the fuel rail and at the main filter- wondering if it could be the fuel pressure regulator (there is no flow after the fpr to the tank when cranking it over, but there is definitely pressure and fuel to the fuel rail), a vacuum problem, I've suspected pretty much every component in the fuel system, but the main suspects now are - vacuum leaks, air leaks at the injectors- and the fpr- maybe the amm? any other thoughts? I should probably verify spark, though it was firing/ then dying, now after all the monkeying it won't even fire- one other thing- I did at some point put the spark plugs in the wrong order and turned it over (10 seconds max)- hopefully this didn't permanently hurt anything- this was after it wouldn't run. Oh yeah and the hall sensor wires/ connector were cracked/ oily due to leaking distributor oil seal - but I think it's ok- need to voltage test it.
thanks,
Sean
