FPR? 140-160 1972

I've not read all the posts yet, but have you considered the FPR?

My 1986 740 had a bad FPR and the economy was horrible, the car barely drove and would stall out. The FPR kept telling the car that there was not enough fuel so the pump was running at full pressure. It did a little damage to the pump and make a characteristic buzzing/sucking sound.

Just a thought. I'm sorting out my own B20E/D-Jet issues right now...
