PLEASE HELP! 960 torque converter lockup is not working! 900

I have a 1997 960 with 176,000 miles. I bought the car 2 months ago. I love Volvo's. I have a 93 240 and a 740. This 960 is a extremely troublesome car. I have dumped nearly $2000 in the car that was supposed to need nothing. Now all of a sudden Im on the highway and everything is finally fine and Im enjoying the car when the stupid tranny arrow light starts blinking and the W, S, E mode buttons start blinking also. The check engine light is on too. The engine was absolutely in 4th gear, but the RPM at 70 mph is 3500! The torque converter lockup that activates at 46 mph is not working for sure. I was 65 miles from home and drove it slipping the whole way at 70. I did not know the tranny fluid was getting extremely hot because this. When I got home there was a little smoke coming from underhood from the heat.

I did not damage the tranny. I drove it today and it drives fine, but the lockup is still not working. The fluid is not burnt, Thank god I just had it flushed.

Two days later the light decided to go off and the converter lockup is working correctly again. I took it for a drive. I came to a hill at 50 mph the lockup seemed to not dis-engage when it should and lugged the engine to 1400 rpm before finally downshifting to 3rd. Soon as it dis-engaged the arrow light came on again and the torque converter lockup was not working again. Now my rpm's over 46 mph are were way to high again.

Sorry for the long story but I want to make it clear the condition. If anyone can tell me what you think the problem is I would greatly appreciate any info. From what I hear on the site I think the lockup solenoid in the valve body is bad. F.C.P Groton is right down the road and he says thats a dealer part. I wanted to run this by you first before I blow another few hundred on this electronically troubled car. Thanks, Dave from RI
