Malfunctioning intermittent rear wipers - 1993 245 200

The intermittent rear wipers don't work on our 93 245. I already tried a couple of relays which did not cure the problem. The wiper moves erratically and parks wherever it wants. Would the next most logical thing to check be the motor? The wires through the hinges look good, at least the part I can see when I open the hatch, and all the other electrical functions in the hatch work properly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
