740 trouble with turbo

I have an 86 740 turbo diesel that moves down the road well but if I hit a steep long hill on the highway I move well for a while and then bam, lose power and start dogging it. The last time this happened I noticed the turbo humming along quietly and nicely and when the power loss happened I also didnt hear the turbo any more.
Any ideas?
