Vac advance causes pinging? 200 1983

This 83 has had nasty light throttle and transitional ping since we've had it.
Premium fuel helps, but does not eliminate it. Cam timing is correct, ignition timing is correct, I an retard it enough that stop it but the car is dangerously slow. I happened to plug the vacuum advance the other day and it cleared right up. Tuneup has been done, fuel pumps are new, 02 is new, engine seems to be in good order otherwise and MPG seems normal. Thoughts?
