What's this piece attached to my factory amp? (pic) 700 1990

Photobucket

What's this box with the 8+1 connector(s)? It's screwed to the side of the factory amp, but doesn't appear to be wired into it. The wiring that was attached to it appears to run towards the fuse box, not the stereo. Is it part of the audio system or something else?

I'm bypassing the factory amp to install an aftermarket stereo, I was planning on putting this mystery box back up in the dash unless someone can tell me definitively that it is in fact part of the factory stereo and that I don't need it anymore.

Thanks,

Mac
