Dealer said Volvo AB might buy Volvo Cars back from Ford! 700 1991

Was at the local Volvo dealer last week, and a salesman said that there was talk that Volvo AB (the original, real, Volvo, still fully and profitably in business, lacking only the car division, which Ford owns), in Sweden, might buy back the car division from Ford soon.

While there is frequently rumor of this kind of thing, especially in light of Ford's financial difficulties lately, this is unique, as far as I know, in coming from a dealer.

It would make sense, sort of: As I understand it, when Volvo AB sold the car division to Ford, they created Volvo Trademark Holdings (or something like that) to hold and manage the Volvo name and trademarks. It is jointly owned by Volvo AB and Ford. This seems to mean several things. First, Volvo AB never gave up rights to control the name and trademarks for the cars. Volvo AB seems to have an desire to maintain the standards of the name/trademarks. And, Volvo AB would seem to have some control over who else gets to use the name/trademarks. In other words, they might have veto power over who else Ford can sell the division to, because they might have veto power over the rights to use of the name/trademarks.

Pretty interesting, and I hope that Volvo AB does buy the car division back.

Any of you hear anything or have any reputable sources?

Kind of related: Today, responding to stories, Mazda, which Ford owns 33% of, said that Ford was not selling its interest in Mazda. But the wording of the denial was such that, if examined carefully, meant "at exactly this time" they did leave the door wide open for a future announcement. It seemed the kind of statement that was intended to prepare everyone for it to happen, not to fully and completely deny that it would ever happen. Also, consider that Volvo car division is all that is left of Ford's former Premier Car division. Ford has sold off Jaguar, LandRover, and whoever else was part of the Premier division. So, maybe Volvo is next.
