87 760 Turbo instrument panel weird problem 700 1987

Hey,

I'm new to the forum it was recommended by my volvo mechanic. The problem I have is that when I turn on my headlights, the instrument panel fails. That is to say the speedometer, odometer, voltmeter, turbometer, gas gauge, everything on the dash fails. In addition, the yield signals in the dash turn permanently on along with the brights light (when i turn the brights on the light goes away, so its opposite, and when I use a turn signal it blinks, but then goes back to being on). The other warning lights don't come on however. I hope that was clear. When I turn the lights off all the gauges go back to normal all though some of them do so slowly. Also when the lights are off my voltmeter doesn't read the correct voltage ( i checked with handheld voltmeter). If anybody can give any insight it would be much appreciated. My mechanic guesses it's some sort of grounding problem. Again, the weird thing is that only when I turn the headlights on does the instrument panel fail. Thanks a lot for your time in the mean time i'll check out the rest of this forum and see what I can learn.

Sincerely,

Jon
