Replacing a Starter 200 1988

I used the ridiculous extensions as well but in order to make it more of a strait shot I actually lowered the back of the transmission with a jack.
Might only be necessary on the B21 but here goes.

So:
-First, it sounds like you need to get some penetrating oil on those bolts. I could get to them from the threaded side but this might be engine specific.
-Next, put the car on jack-stands, then put a jack under the transmission.
-Remove the left side transmission support-saddle bolts and losen the right side ones.
- Lower the back of the transmission with the jack and the engine/tranny will angle down at you.

It gives you a better more straight look at your starter bolts. Should take some of the stress off your tools.
