I brought my recently acquired blue 86 toyota camry down to where I live on Monday night. It gets 32+ mpg freeway at 70mph vs. my 90 740T's 21 or 22.
Less than 18 hours later, it was totaled.
I was driving home, going about 50, when three horses came running onto the road from down the hillside, and were hidden by tall grass. They were 60-100 feet in front of me, and I barely had time to slam on the brakes. The tires laid down rubber quite nicely, and I had the sense to duck behind one A-pillar.
I hit one of the three horses, and it came up onto the roof and windshield, crushing the area over the passenger seat, and only missing me because the car's tail veered slightly to the left and changed the angle of the impact.
The paramedics said I was lucky to live and that horses usually cause fatalities. Neither passenger side door will open.
I called in the wreck, being completely untouched but for hitting my head on the ceiling. The horse died, although slowly, since nobody would put it out of its misery. The car is totaled, and at an impound lot today. I'll be getting it out tomorrow I hope and selling it for scrap to a JY. I did go to a hospital via ambulance and got checked out.
Unfortunately, I had just done an oil/plugs change and put two brand new tires on the front. The tires are 185/70/13's and are mounted on 5-lug wheels. They're Falken something or others. 50K mile warranty, Temp:B, traction:A, treadwear:500? Driven less than 500 miles if anyone wants them.
The car was salvage-titled from a previous scrape-up, and so I get nothing from my insurance.
Does anyone have any advice for seeking recompense from the horse owner? I would appreciate it.
I filed a claim with my insurance company and have both a medical contract and nothing but advice RE the car, since I only had liability.
So far I am going to do this:
photo the heck out of the car, get it out of tow ASAP, contact horse owner's homeowners' insurance (hope she has some) and file a claim. I will have to transfer the title from my brother's name to mine to take care of the scrapping, as he is hundreds of miles away and the title is still in his name.

PS I plan to pull an old alarm from his car and put it on my brick. It's just a shock sensor and speaker AFAIK.
PPS W00t, I am now full synthetic on my brick and fixed my dipstick o-ring thanks to advice from the 'board :D
