Convince me not to wash my engine bay... 200 1986

I am seriously considering purchasing a can of "Engine Bright" or some such cleaner and taking a hose to the engine bay of my 244. It's not that it's covered in oil/grease, just a thick film of 22 years of dirt and dust. Every time I reach my hand in there it comes out covered in it.

This car is within the range of the degrading wiring harness, but it has been replaced.

I've lived the horror story of what can go wrong after engine cleaning. For me, ten minutes of cleaning caused two weeks of engine harness replacing on an '82 244.

Success stories? Tips and techniques?

Thanks,
Will
