Timing belt 700

Just about to put a new timing belt and tensioner in my 1988 760 Turbo. The belt snapped in rush hour, taken bout by a bad tensioner (fun!). I've got the upper cover off, and when I try to line up the mark on the cam with the cover, it's off by about 5mm or so. I can't line it up perfectly due to the valve springs forcing the cam to stop at certain positions, like detents. Is it critical to be lined up perfectly, or is this normal? Also trying to figure out how to immobilize the crank at the flywheel, but I'm not sure I have the type of inspection window with the cover bolted on. Where do I look for this? I've been trying to find pictures, but to no avail. I have two windows in the transmission with little plastic vented covers. Does this mean I don't have the one with the cover? I'd do the rope trick, but I'll need to immobilize the crank to re-tighten the harmonic balancer... By the way, the extra oil lines on the Turbo make getting to the power steering pump a pain. Still trying to loosen that. Not much room for a wrench...
