I replaced the strut inserts, strut bearings, bump stops and boots. A lot of the front suspension problems were fixed by that, i.e. the bouncing, front end shaking at around 55 mph, scraping noises as the car was bouncing. But a new kind of clicking noise appeared that was not there before. I replaced the original Volvo inserts (oil, I think) with KYB GR2 (gas), and the original bump stops/boots with whatever FCPGroton sells, don't know the brand. The clicking noise can be heard when hitting small bumps, going straight. I played with the car raising it and lowering it on the jack, keeping an eye on the left strut mount. I could see the end of the strut rod move in the mount, and that's when I could hear the noise. I tightened the nut as far as I could, it was not loose, nor was anything else that I had to loosen or take off to get the struts off. Now, the new bump stops did not have metal washers integrated in them like the original ones did, so I bought new Volvo bump stops (and new boots), and re-did the strut job. Now it is quiet. So, my question to the experts here is this: are there some combinations of strut inserts / bump stops that are known not to work? Or should I have just put metal washers under the mounts or something? I did try to add washers on top of the mounts, thinking I was running out of thread on the strut rods, but that did not help.
