740 rear axle compatibility 700 1987

Can a rear axle from an 89 740 be used in an 87 if neither car has ABS? I am thinking about converting an 87 to a manual transmission and have found an 89 donor car. I know that the ABS cars have different numbers of teeth on the tone rings (96 on 88 and before, 48 on 89 and up) and that the axle internals are also different form year to year, but since non-ABS cars all have 12 tooth tone rings, regardless of year, there is some possibility that it might work. Has anyone ever done such a swap? If so, how did it turn out? Does the 89 speed sensor work OK with the 87 wiring and gauge?
