240, $1600 in repairs for Air Mass Meter + Head Gasket? 200 1983

Howdy All --

So, my beloved 240 4-door experienced a sudden drop in MPG after its last smog test (went from 18mpg to 5mpg).

After trying suggestions from the Brickboard, I gave up and paid $95 to a Volvo specialist for a diagnostic workup.

His comments:

(A) Bad Air Mass Meter = explains low mileage. (Seemed reasonable to me)

(B) Head Gasket problem, letting coolant into cylinder #2, which is why car idles rough on morning startup.

For this he wanted to charge me $550 to replace the AMM, and $1050 to replace the head gasket.

Now, seems to me that I could get an AMM new online for ~$230, and install myself fairly easily. Not sure about the head gasket.

So, all, thoughts on whether y'all believe the diagnosis... and if so, what's a great source for an inexpensive AMM on line?

thx

- K
