Spring-activated choke on a 59 445? 444-544

My 59 has a spring which pushes the choke closed. I have never seen anything like that before. Is that setup "stock"? Am I suppose to let go of the choke knob & let the choke close as soon as my car starts?
My previous experience with chokes was that you would pull the choke out when the car is cold, in cold weather, & leave it out & drive until the car warms up. This spring activated choke - where the choke closes unless I hold it out, is baffling to me.
I have the 16B, 2SU H4 setup.
Any thoughts?
Jim
