Perhaps "Eclip" is not the correct term, maybe it is called a snap ring, or perhaps neither of those terms. The item you describe is the way I would describe the M46od solenoid.

Again I am not familiar with the components in the overdrive unit on your car. The solenoid on those definitely has Oring seals and of course they can go bad. The clip in the end when removed gives access to the plunger or piston that has the Orings.
