antenna problem 900 1995

I kept getting a cutting in-and-out of the AM signal. From full volume down to about 20% (just loud enough to hear). Happened only on the road but didn't seem to be aggravated by rough road. Car has a factory power antenna (which does not retract - stuck in full extended position). Factory radio.

Now I go back to the antenna and grasp it, when the signal is cut out, and it immediately comes back to full volume. Doesn't seem to change it if I try to push it side-to-side with any force - only grasping it and letting go causes the full signal to come-and-go.

BTW, FM works fine.

Is there some sort of ground problem between the antenna and the body ? Internal problem in the antenna ? Or (my own personal favorite): Just junk it and buy a fixed antenna ???!?
