rattling heat shield on manifold pipe - what is the purpose? 700

I thought its purpose was to keep the exhaust gases from cooling off before they reached the catalytic converter, so that it would reach operating temperature more quickly. The car will run just fine without them, and should have no problem passing emissions as long as it's fully warmed up when you take it in for the test. If you remove the shields, be careful while doing so. They sometimes contain a white flaky material that might be asbestos.
