heater core - a real stumper 700 1992

Hi All,
No heat and out of ideas. Been thinking about this for a couple of months and now it's getting mission critical. Engine reaches normal op temp (good thermostat), a/c is off, slide the temp dial all the way to hot, fan on high and get nothing, not even warm. The vacuum operated heater valve, moves up as temp dial is turned and I hooked a jug to the output of the heater core (top hose I believe because valve is on the bottom hose) and I get about a quart of coolant in about 10 seconds. So I am stumped - hot coolant going thru heater core but no heat. Is there more than one passage? Could it be going thru but not thru the part where the heat exchanger to the inside is. Really out of understanding here, any ideas would be appreciated.
