On radiators, autotrans, and cooling 200

I was reading another post about "cooking" the auto tranny with a radiator failure and wanted you folks to know that you do not have to route the transmission cooling through the radiator. In fact, if you are doing a lot of heavy pulling or live where it is hot, it is better not to. Several years ago, I bought a Hayden external cooler (before I knew anything much about Volvos!) and used it to supplement the cooling from my radiator on my 245 for a vehicle towing job. I later replaced the radiator with one out of an 88 745T and routed the cooling through the Hayden cooler only. Since then, I have made a trip to the West coast and back, towed my boat for over 20 hours at freeway speed, and towed the 780 for 6.5 hours back from Georgia. I wholeheartedly recommend that you start thinking outside of the box where these vehicles are concerned and minimize your maintenance expenditures.
