Sounds like the carbs and the fuel pump are fine then, given that the fuel comes out when it diesels and turns over in reverse.
Set jets at 1 1/2 turns from level with the bridge and see what happens.
It might be an idea to confirm the timing marks are accurate? Roll the engine to valve overlap on cyl 1 or 4 and see that the zero mark is centered with overlap.
