I got the day off work due to a sewage block (yes they did evacuate the building - pun intended). So I pulled the distributor to find that the weights were not behaving. When I cleaned it last time I didn't take the shaft all the way out as the pin on the bottom seemed convinced that staying was the best option. I drove it out this time (a little scary) and got on with cleaning everything properly. I cleaned off a bunch of accumulated crud that I couldn't see or clean before. Polished everything including the weights with steel wool and put it back in. I now have advance and around 10 degrees BTDC on the timing. One problem bested.
On to the carbs again. I watched very carefully and there is still some fuel coming out of the vent when it is running. This is making tuning impossible (I think) as it is feeding in too much fuel all the time (creating an inherently rich set-up). I've followed the tuning instructions in both the manual and from Rhys and there is no making them better. I've got them leaned right out (jet set to even with the bridge) and the dieseling is less, but still there. There is no way this thing should run with the jets set that high - ergo my assumption that it's getting fuel elsewhere.
I tried the Haynes manual trick where you adjust the jet level, then drop it 2.5 turns, then set the idle speed using the screws, then fiddle with the mixture for max RPM then back the RPM's it off with the idle screws, then play with both mixture and idle until changing both mixture an idle screw varies RPM. This doesn't work very well as my idle would be 1500 RPM.
At this point I'm getting pretty good at getting the HIF's on and off the car, but the rubber gasket on the bottom of the fuel bowl has grown appreciably. One more time can't do any further harm. With the cam that's in it I don't expect a smooth idle at 700 rpm, but having it set at 1000 rpm is going a little to high for my liking.
Also, at this point when I rev it up, it's very slow to come down. In the video (before I "fixed" the float level) the throttle response was very crisp. It has to be pig rich.
