Temp Gage 444-544

Has anyone tried to repair their OEM engine coolant temp gage? A few years ago there was a link posted to a site where a guy repaired his gage installed on some old US car. Just wondering if someone here has tried & was successful. My gage's capilary tube is cut & the bulb/nut is gone. I have a cheapo set of 1.5" gages (amp, oil pressure, and temp) I am considering installing, but I kinda dread the extra wires for the amp meter, and I'm a bit leary of the oil pressure gage line failing.

Any help with repairing my original temp gage appreciated - thanks!
