Speedometer stops working 700

My 1991 740 Wagon is having an issues witht he speedometer. I replaced the wires from the sensor on the differential to the black box that is mounted
inside next to the fuel filler tube. It had no affect, the speedometer will work for a few minutes and then the needle drops to 0. It will work again only after the car has been parked for a while. Not sure waht else to change, perhaps the sensor? Any advice would be great!!
