Speedometer stops working 700

i have the simular problem with my 87 740....the whole dash wont light up when you turn on the driving lights while in the dark and you have to mess with the dimmer to actually get the dash to work but no dash lights come on. Also, if im driving with the lights on around a half an hour with the heat on suddenly the dashboard will light up and the shifter lights... But in the day time without the lights on the speedometer works fine....crazy volvo electrical system. You can try turning the dimmer left to right and it may work....anythings possible
