Driving Light Wiring ( Yeah I know it's not a VOLVO problem , ... but it COULD be)

Howdy Brett,

Go to www.autozone.com. If you don't already have a login create one. Then navigate to the Repair Guides. Add the year, make, and model to your list of cars and select the S-10. In the repair guide navigation you will find the schematics.

I looked at the headlight schematic. The DRL relay pulls in the high beams under control of the DRL Control Module which depends on the headlight switch to know when to turn on the DRL relay. It looks like if you added a relay to the high beams you created a ground loop on the switch side that would have that module confused. ;-)

When the lights are ON the DRL relay is open. It isn't shown in the schematic but the normally closed contact of the relay has to be tied to ground for the left side headlight to work. There is a slight difference between the sealed beam version and the composite headlights. Regardless, that leg has to be grounded when the light switch is ON.

When the light switch is OFF, the DRL module supplies voltage via the DRL relay through the left headlight to the right headlight and then to ground.

You may be able to leave in place the taps you've already added. I think you can use an OP-AMP to isolate the circuit; making it invisible to the DRL module. An OPerational AMPlifier has a very large impedance on the input side; they consume only microamps from the control circuit making them effective isolation devices.

Give me a little time and I'll post a schematic of the circuit you will need to add. Don't worry, it is very simple and robust. I'll be back in bit...

Mr. Shannon DeWolfe -- I've taken to using mister because my name misleads folks on the WWW. I am a 52 year old fat man. ;-)
