'96 960 oil use 900 1996

When I bought my '96 960 a year ago there were times when it would use a quart of oil in 300 miles. I did the "Italian tune-up" and changed to Mobile1 synthetic 10W30 oil. Oil use now is between 500 and 1000 miles per quart. There are no leaks on the floor or undercarriage and I don't detect a puff of smoke at the tailpipe when I start it up, so I conclude that the use must occur from oil slipping past the piston rings. I've never had a car whose oil use varied so much. Is there something else I should be doing to keep the oil use at 1000 miles per quart (or better)? BTW, I never start it up without bringing it up to operating temp before shutting it off. Thanks.
