Wiper Catastrophe! 200 1983

This morning on the way to work, wipers working real hard on my 1983 240 and all of a sudden it seemed they got out of sync and the driver side wiper crashed against the passenger side wiper ripping off the blade!

Wiper motor no longer working (checked fuse #2, which I think is correct and it is good). It also appears that the passenger side arm is coming off (where nut is attached at base -the rod the nut is attached to- seems to be sticking out further then it should from the body of the vehicle.

I am familiar with the behind the scenes linkage as I had the cable jump off of the cam and had to get in there behind the glove box and put it back on.

So, it appears that the wiper motor has failed(don't hear anything when turning on the wipers) and the linkage and cam assembly is also a mess.

Is this the way these wiper motors usually fail? Don't they just not turn on?
