Synthetic ATF in the 4-speed trans / rear axle? 200 1985

Once I replaced the ATF fluid in the 4 speed trans with Amsoil synthetic ATF. It worked OK but the electric overdrive would not work as well (would not engage while cold). The local Volvo shop said synthetic was not a good idea and converted it back to the regular ATF. Anyone out there have experience with using synthetics for the 4 speed trans and the rear axle? What kind you recommend? My wagon has 283K miles and still runs like a top.
