What the manuals state (ver batim) Going back through the years...(but not forward) 200

As you can see, at the bottom of the page, early on 87 octane was the norm for U.S. market cars with mechanical injection. But if you didn't understand the meaning of RON the 1980 and earlier recommendation might have been confusing.

As we move into electronic injection, around '83, they were still saying 87 pump octane for U.S. cars, even for turbos w/ CI.

Then they start recommending 87 or higher.

Then they began to suggest 91 pump octane depending on climate and altitude.

Finally they just pack it in and recommend 91 octane.

So I don't know if they changed design parameters or just finally figured they should have been recommending 91 all along.

BTW, I use 91 in the wagon, but the 242 does fine on 87.

Volvo engines are designed for optimum performance on unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating, AKI, of 91, or above. AKI , (ANTI KNOCK INDEX), is an average of the Research Octane Number, RON, the Motor Octane Number, MON, (RON + MON)/2. The minimum octane requirement is AKI 87 (RON 91).

90

Volvo recommends the use of premium unleaded gasoline with an (R+M)/2 rating of 91. This is generally equivalent to a Research Octane Number (RON) of 95 or higher.

Volvo engines require unleaded gasoline with an (R+M)/2 octane rating (also called the Anti Knock Index, or AKI) of 87 or higher. This is generally equivalent to a Research Octane Number (RON) of 91 or higher. Volvo recommends the use of premium unleaded gasoline with an (R+M)/2 rating of 91, for improved performance and driveability at high altitudes and in hot climates.
