Stiff steering 200 1992

I suddenly experienced a stiffness of steering on my 1992 240. I now need to actually help the wheel turn back to center after rounding a corner (city driving). I took it in to a Volvo mechanic I trust and he said nothing felt or looked amiss after inspection. The power steering motor will make a straining sound when parallel parking, when wheel is turned all the way - as it has for as long as I've owned the car. I don't think it's the power steering.

Since the mechanic came up blank and my arms are suffering (I think this is a 'feel' thing that only the owner can sense) I am wondering if there is something I can do to ease the stiffness and help it to center. Is there something I can oil up or adjust myself?

Thanks in advance.
