You've got 3 wires coming out of the covering sleeve. 1 is blue and the other 2 are black. Blue goes to the top connection. One of the 2 blacks is earth and goes on the centre tag. The other black goes to the bottom tag. This one is live so if you have the fan "on" it will spark if you touch it to the centre tag. The earth wire won't spark if you touch any of the tags but will spark if you touch either of the other 2 wires when they are live. Using a meter is better than "spark testing"! By the time you read this the job will probably be sorted. Don't forget the Haynes.............
