Electric impact wrenches? 700 1991

Have to do suspension work so bought a DeWalt electric impact wrench, to get the front strut nut off (see the faq). Besides, it would really come in handy with all the other work I do on the car, maybe making it easier, and thus making me more prone to actually doing it.

I have never used any type of impact wrench before, so I have no idea of how they work, or how to use one, but . . . this thing is supposed to be capable of 350 ft/lbs torque. For fun, and to see how it worked, I tried to use it to remove my wheel lug nuts, which are torqued, by hand, to 63 ft/lbs. And it did not do it. It seemed to hammer and hammer and hammer, but would not bust them loose. Even after I broke them loose by hand, it seemed to hammer on them for a while, say about 1 to 3 seconds (differed on different nuts) before it began to move them. Is this normal for an impact wrench? Am I doing something wrong? Or is this thing defective and I should return it? Is this thing going to be able to get the suspension nuts and bolts off when I rebuild the front suspension over the Thanksgiving break?

I would think that a wrench capable of applying 350 ft/lbs would make short work of removing 63 ft/lb lug nuts.
