smelly heater leak 200 1989

Hello Brickboarders,

My 89 240 wagon developed (very quickly) a nasty smell of burning antifreeze when I turn on the heater. I suspect it is a busted heater core and am very reluctant to replace it (don't have the time or money). There is no problem when I don't run the heater, other than it is 10 degrees out and the seat heater just doesn't do the job.

Does anyone have any experience with 12 volt electric heaters that plug into the lighter? Is this a viable alternative? Any suggestions?

Thanks.
