1800 Fuel Gauge 1800

Hi Can anyone help me, I need to see if my fuel gauge is working. When I turn on ignition, the needle jumps up a bit, but only a little bit, even on a full tank. I have taken ou the sender and all is fine, no holes. Can anyone tell me the somple test that I have to do to see if the gauge is faulty. The other question is, rather than follow the green wire from the sender through the body work to the fuse box, can I create new wire from sender to fuse box, so I know that all is well with fresh wire and there are no hidden breakages.

Thanks for your help. Jimmy
