Dash switch & shift indicator bulbs 700 1992

Today I replaced some burnt out lamps for the dash switches and shift indicator in my '92 740 Wagon. The dash switches were quite straightforward, as per the FAQ. It's too bad the bulbs themselves can't be replaced, only the bulb assemblies at $6.50 a piece (p/n 30710781). The shift indicator bulb was quite an ordeal; the FAQ is optimistic. No matter how I tried, I couldn't get the lamp socket back up into its recess. However, I must have got the tip of the bulb in the right hole, because it lights up the indicator just fine. I could not find the proper bulb for this (#2721) at my auto parts store, but picked up the smallest one they had, #37, which was the same wattage. The base is a hair wider (T1-3/4 vs. T1-1/2) but just fit the socket. I imagine if one were resourceful, one could even graft one of these bulbs into those dash switch light assemblies.
