Speedometer/Odo issues in my 1993 945ti - Help!? 900 1993

Hey everyone
So I have a 1993 945turbo with just under 250k miles on it - well, according to the odometer anyways.
it and the speedo have been working only intermittently in the last week or two. Sometimes it works sometimes not, I've been driving off of my tach
first of all, how do I test to see if it's the sender or the cluster or the unit itself?
Secondly, what years work? I've heard a 1992 cluster and a 960 cluster will not work.
