M46 OD slow to get power 200 1980

This is the M46 OD setup with the slide switch and without a relay. When I slide the switch on, the light in the cluster doesn't turn on and the OD doesn't engage until around 2-5 minutes go by, then the light spontaneously turns on and the OD immediately engages. Pushing the lever to the right and/or rearward has no effect. Usually any subsequent engagement is quicker, and once the OD engages it stays engaged for the most part (drops out momentarily once in a while accompanied by the cluster light turning off). I've also noticed once or twice that when I slide the switch off, the light stays on for a second or two (OD stays engaged). This makes me suspect the switch on the shifter (it's the original switch) has a problem - before I spend $37 for a new one, wanted to check if that sounded right. The wire connections on the switch are tight.
