access to brakelight switch?

I've learned a lot since my last post. My car is a 1990 240dl wagon and am trying to get brakelights. What I thought was the brakelight switch was the cruise control switch with the same blue/red brakelight wire as the brake switch. When I give the cruise control blue/red wire 12 volts all my brake lights come on. Now that I know where the true brakelight switch is I am discourage to find I can barely get my fingers on the switch end itself let alone get to the wires that sit behind the plate it is screwed through. And am worried that if I can unscrew the nut holding the switch I may not be able to get it back into place and reattach it. Is there any trick to getting to this devil of a switch? Obviously I need to check it first. I am thinking that after all this that it is my problem. Thanks for any suggestions.
