Alternator or regulator problem?? 140-160 1971

I need some help diagnosing some electrical issues. At idle the engine lugs and RPM's drop noticeably when I turn on electrical devices such as headlights or heater fan or wipers. My "alt" light on the dash always glows dimly and get brighter with more things turned on. Could this be the regulator or alternator? How can I determine which one may be faulty?
