reoccuring 2-1-2 code LH 2.4 (o2 sensor) 200 1993

1993 240 wagon 304k, I bought the car with 249k 3 years ago and the day I drove it home the check engine light came on.I pulled the code 2-1-2.replaced the o2 sensor with a new bosch 3 wire unit from FPCGroton.com.I year later the CEL came on again so I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes to clear the ECU codes.after a couple weeks it came back on(same code).I replaced the o2 sensor again and it was fine for a year or so but recently it came back on.Needless to say I am not buying another sensor.what can be causing this ? the car runs great,no smog test hear in Maine so I don't know if it is a emmisions issue.
