Is there suppose to be a spring in the outside door handle assembly? 444-544

Hello PV-ites,
Well, I'm still struggling with repairing the outside door handle on my driver's side. I need a new lock mechanism & I've been told that the lock mechanisms the parts houses have are all defective & that I may have to wait for 6 months to get one -AARGH!
I did get the rubber gaskets for the doors & locks for my 445 from VP Auto & decided to put them in. When I went to install the gasket in the passenger's side I noticed a spring inside the door handle assembly. My driver's side outside door handle does not have this. I could not find it in the parts book either. However, the spring definitely gets rid of the in & out slop I reported in an earlier email on this subject. My question - is this spring stock? Or just something a PO rigged up?
Here's a link to a photo of the assembly that I took:

Hope the link works.
Thanks in advance for any/all replies.
