I have trouble shifting out of park 900 1996

I have a 1996 960 wagon. often it takes a few tryes to get it to shift from park. I am pressing the brake so please don't flood me with the "try pressing the brake idiot" eamils. The other night my wife took the car to the store and was stuck for 20 minutes trying to get the car out of park. It finally went and we haven't had a problem with it today. Any ideas? thanks for the help.
